What is a Gynecologic Oncologist?
  • A gynecologic oncologist is a gynecologist who specializes in the diagnosis
and treatment of women with cancer of the reproductive organs.

  • After completing a 4 year residency in obstetrics and gynecology, gynecologic
oncologists must complete an additional 3 year fellowship specializing in pre-
    cancerous and cancerous conditions.

  • They learn the highest surgical skills levels required to properly stage and
remove the majority of the tumor, know as debulking, as well as chemotherapy
    and radiation therapy techniques.

  • To find a gynecologic oncologist outside of the Kansas City area, visit the
Society of Gynecologic Oncologists at www.sgo.org and click on Find-a-Doc.

What is a Genetic Counselor?
  • Traditionally, a genetic counselor has a masters degree in genetic counseling
and has studied genetic diseases and how those diseases run in families.
  • The genetic counselor can help a person understand their risk and can assess
the risk of passing their disease on to children.
  • They will discuss genetic testing, coordinate testing, and interpret those
    results.
  • Genetic counselors work as part of a health care team to help people make
    informed decisions about their health.
  • To find a genetic counselor outside of the Kansas City area, visit the National
